Hey Ron,

Remember that a fellow by the name of Alexander swept right through where you are on his way to India around 2300 years ago. Who knows how much of those customs have Greek origins or influence.

I'll shoot you a reply to your last email sometime this weekend. Maybe after Seattle gets stomped. :D

Always a pleasure to hear from you, old friend.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of the ancient cultures hung on here, since a good portion this civilization still seems traditionally ancient. Like the painting below..

Neat post. For some reason I chuckled at this sentence: "Their local-type food is prepared for them and brought in by military trucks, where it's downloaded at the gates and then a handful of detainees under supervision bring it in."

For a second I pictured this guy sitting at a PC being pissed off the modem connection was so slow and the food wouldn't download faster.

The mind is a weird thing.

Hope things dry out for you a bit.

I'm glad you didn't fall :) My clutzy-factor triples at least when someone is watching me.

Safe is relative, but I'll stay as safe as this war will let me.

But something that makes my life a WHOLE lot easier is accepting that if it's my time, then it's my time. Life in a combat zone is much like the old game of Battleship. If your number gets called...

Dear Lord no. Compulsory service sucks, but I volunteered for this. This is my second year-long tour here too.

There are aspects of being in the service that suck, some of which I'll blog about.. but there are aspects of it that mean a lot to me.

I am familiar, however, with your country's compulsory service, and on that note, I must agree, that army service sucks, especially when fighting an unconventional opposition, with which I'm sure your familiar.

Hey rinns! Yes they did, tragically. I won't be so cliche as to blame it on some pretty horrible calls by the referee's, but I will say that the Seahawks did indeed lose to a team that played better than they did.

It's harder than some jobs back in the states, but I think what's hard is putting the greater good ahead of yourself. Humans, by nature, are self-preserving. They'll do whatever they have to do to take care of number one, so it's really against everything natural to put yourself in harm's way.

Leaving loved ones behind is probably the hardest thing though. But that's something that I think more people can relate to.
